Have you ever approached someone you don’t know for work? He/She is most likely going to request to see your portfolio. Up till when I got this request for my portfolio, I was working with people I know and friends of friends. I didn’t have any cohesive piece of work to share as a portfolio, so I set out to create one (self Initiated work)
I decided to create a logo mark and showcase different use cases of the logo mark in an identity system. I am showing my work and some process I used to get from start to finish, this is not what i sent to the client, I designed a booklet with Adobe Indesign which you can download for free here. It would have been boring to just show pictures of the things I have done, so I had to make up a story to go with it.
To create the story, I made up an imaginary ideal client who owned her business( a certified relationship counselor). I wrote a short brief stating what she asked for and the visual system I employed to complete the brief, you can download the booklet for free here
Below are pieces of the composition, some made it into the booklet, some didn’t. I learnt a lot from this self initiated work, I was happy when I had completed this project, I became aware of my capabilities. It made me more confident , which is a good feeling. I encourage you, in any field that you’re in to do some self initiated work. It opens doors.
