My landlord asked me to design a label for his wife’s sobolo drink (a local Ghanaian drink made with dried hibiscus flowers). There was an upcoming event and he wanted to package the drink nicely so that his wife could easily be contacted and get repeat business from people who enjoyed the local drink.

He prepared some information that he wanted on the label and sent it to me via Whatsapp. The first thing I did was look for references, one reference was the Alvaro drink, although the final label doesn’t look like the label of the Alvaro drink, some ideas were picked from the label.

Some thoughts came to mind as I tried breaking down the project into little manageable tasks, the following is what I wrote down;

  1. Create a word mark for the product name.
  2. Find an interesting background for the drink.
  3. Find images related to the product in question to be used in the design.
  4. Layout (sketch) the information hierarchy and how you will present the information on the label
  5. Design , get feedback, make revisions

The next thing was to get behind a computer and follow the steps I had written down. May I note that it is not a straight forward path as enumerated above, nor is it a format I am recommending for you, everyone solves problems differently but some tasks or processes will be similar.

Below is the label design of Sobolo, made in Accra – Ghana.

How will you do about a project like this?
