I remember sending out a lot of messages introducing myself a graphic designer online, on whatsapp platforms and chat groups. A lady I had sent a message sent a lead my way, the number of a guy who had advertised for the services of a graphic designer.

I contacted him right away, introducing myself and the purpose of my direct message. He acknowledged that he needed the services of a graphic designer. He explained what he needed in the next few messages and added a sketch he had made of what he had in mind. I told him how much it would cost to create what he is asking for to which he said go ahead and start.

I did not ask for a deposit, I believed that if I did my part of the work and present the work to him he will pay for my services. I was wrong; apparently he had commissioned several other designers to do the same job. He had conveniently organized a contest and the winner of course is the only one who gets paid.

It was angry that I had spent time and resources for nothing, I have forgiven the guy but I bring this up to share a lesson I learnt with you, to help you avoid doing same. Find below what I did, I didn’t refine the design to the clients taste; the relationship didn’t get that far. This is something you may encounter as a growing graphic designer. What are some of the challenges you have encountered as a graphic designer?
