In March 2018, I left home and rented a studio apartment (locally referred to as single room) in a compound house a few meters away from the Ghana commercial bank training school in Nungua.
The room required some renovations; I did not like the paint color (a dark shade of blue), I preferred a light color like vanilla ice cream. I had to do the painting myself because the quotes from some painters that I contacted was a little too steep for my budget then.
I went to the nearest paint shop I could find and bought some paint, tools and equipment. I did not know all what I would need, but with the help of the store keeper I chose the right tools. Below are the things I bought.
- A 10 liter bucket of off-white emulsion paint
- One paint brush
- One 1 inch brush (for corners and detailing)
- One paint roller
- One scraper (to scrape off the old paint)
- One tin of chocolate brown oil paint
- 1 liter bottle of Turpentine
There in my new room with all the things I needed, I started by scraping off the old paint. I mixed some paint with water in a different bucket and started painting a section of the wall. At some point, it did not look like I was doing it right, so I took a break, picked up my mobile phone, visited YouTube to find some videos on do it yourself room painting.
I found one tutorial by a woman, she made painting look easy. I watched the video over and over again till I was sure I understood her technique. The rest was history. Below is the before and after of my little studio apartment.
