Providence has its own way of bringing in new work. I wanted to get to the supermarket to buy a few things before they close, trudging on clumsily with two silk screens in hand a well-built gentleman sitting in front of his stall called me. Do you design, he asked? I nodded in confirmation. I need you to do a shirt for me with “Hwentia GH” at the back and a logo in front, how much will it cost me?

I was an inexperienced graphic designer at that time, I knew very little about pricing my designs and I had very low confidence. He was forward with me that he was not going to pay for the design (you will meet clients like this at some point in your design career) but he would pay for the silk screen and the printing of the shirt, I took the work. I gave him a quote, he paid and we exchanged numbers. Our chosen channel of communication was voice call and whatsapp.

I sketched out a few ideas for a logo. I ended up making the logo below using the silhouette of hwentia, a medicinal seed to form the letter K since his name was Kofi. I also made a mock up for him to show him what the shirt would look like. He loved the design, I made his shirt and I was glad I had served another customer.
